Russell was KIA/MIA when the Troopship H.T.M. The Rohna was attacked by a German plane who fired a guided bomb that sunk the ship, on Nov. 26, 1943, and he is honored with the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Navy & Marine Presidential Unit Citation, European, African, Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, WW II Victory Medal.

Russell is buried/Mentioned at North Africa American Cemetery and Memorial, Carthage, Tunis, Tunisia.
