On July 25th 1944, the U.S. freighter Robin Goodfellow is torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-862 (later I-502) while on route from Cape Town, South Africa, to New York, carrying a cargo of 8,602tons of chrome ore.

All hands (including the 27 Armed Guard sailors and the 41-man merchant complement) perish.
