Bernhard was KIA when they were hit by FLAK, the Plane exploded/burned and crashed near Cherbourg (Brix) on 20 April, 1944, he is honored with a Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, WW II Victory Medal.

Bernhard is buried/mentioned at Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial Colleville-sur-Mer, Departement du Calvados, Basse-Normandie, France.
