Thornton died during on board the USS Spence when it was foundred in Typhoon Cobra on Dec, 18, 1944, Fireman First Class Thornton R. Alexander is honored with a Philippine Liberation Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Citation, American Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.
