Gunnar was KIA when the USS Bunker Hill was attacked by Kamikaze’s  on May 11, 1945, Seaman First Class Gunnar Abildgaard is honored with a Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.

 

Gunnar  is buried/mentioned at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial  Manila, Metro Manila, National Capital Region, Philippines.
